June 27 – Belgium wrapped up their Women’s Euro 2025 preparations with a morale-boosting 2-0 victory against Greece in a friendly.
On the back of a torrid Nations League campaign and a 5-0 defeat against neighbours France, the Belgians needed some uplifting and a routine win against the Greeks with goals from Tessa Wullaert and Jill Janssens provided just that.
With a goal and an assist, Wullaert, Belgium’s number nine, was instrumental again. The striker will need to carry a team that is still looking to define its identity under new manager Elisabet Gunnarsdottir.
The Icelandic coach has not yet settled on a starting XI, but against Greece, Lisa Lichtfus started in goal, Laura Deloose got the nod at left back and Mariam Toloba featured in midfield.
“The result is not the most important thing, I am satisfied with many aspects of the match,” said Belgium’s manager Gunnarsdottir. “Certainly when you look at how we started the first half: defensively strong and we demand the ball. I have not seen it better since I arrived.”
“When you have 80% possession, you want to be a bit more efficient. We hit the crossbar twice and still have a few good chances. Then you want more goals.”
At Euro 2025, Belgium will be underdogs in Group B, facing Italy, Portugal and Spain. They will open their campaign against the Italians in Sion on Thursday, July 3.
