Mexico 2-0 Suriname:
June 18 – The Mexican national team is perhaps the only country in world football that plays home matches in two countries. The Azteca Stadium in Mexico City is, of course, their spiritual home; however, in Los Angeles – where they roared to victory over the Dominican Republic – and tonight in the heart of Texas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington versus Suriname, the team is welcomed by partisan support and rapturous anticipation.
March 8 – Australia’s women’s team won the inaugural Nations Cup on home soil with a 3-0 win against Argentina. The win was welcome news for the Matildas in the lead up to the World Cup after the recent sacking of coach Alen Stajcic.
March 8 – Lionel Messi has returned to the Argentina squad for the first time since the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He will join Lionel Scaloni’s team later this month against Venezuela and Morocco.
March 8 – A 44-year-old Manchester United fan is being treated in hospital after being stabbed in Paris following the club’s dramatic Champions League win over Paris St-Germain on Wednesday night.

March 7 – UEFA members are meeting in Istanbul today for an unpublicised strategic meeting that is expected to discuss competition format beyond 2024 and the eagerly anticipated FIFA Council meeting in Miami next week.

March 7 – Wolverhampton Wanderers, the famous old Midlands club, now Chinese owned, which is enjoying a successful return to the English top flight, ran up an eye-watering £55 million loss in its promotion season.
March 7 – FIFA ended its last four-year cycle with revenue of $6.4 billion. The world governing body has leaked details of its finances to selected media that reportedly show cash reserves having now been boosted to $2.74 billion after concerns that reserves were dwindling.

March 7 – Leicester City’s financial fairy tale came to an abrupt end in the year to end-May 2018 after their on-pitch exploits of recent seasons. Bereft of European football, the Foxes, as was foreseeable, suffered a severe reverse in both turnover and profitability, while managing to remain narrowly in the black at the pre-tax level.

March 7 – When the great and the good of UEFA, accused of being behind the times, finally gave the green light for the video assistant referee system to be used in the knockout stages of their most prestigious competition, they could hardly have anticipated the furore that exploded in Paris and, to a lesser extent, Portugal, on Wednesday night.
March 7 – FIFA and Conmebol have condemned “the cases of sexual and professional abuse, violence and/or the violation of women and children’s rights” in Colombian women’s football. An U-17 national women’s player has accused a member of the coaching staff of sexual abuse last year.
March 7 – Premier League Manchester City’s owners City Football Group could invest in Indian Super League franchise Mumbai City FC. The English giants have long been linked to Indian and adding a local club to their ever-growing portfolio.
March 7 – In a rare outburst of feelings that would normally be kept in-house, Germany’s World Cup winner Thomas Muller (pictured) says he is “puzzled” and “angry” by coach Joachim Low’s decision to discard him from the national squad as part of a rebuilding process.
March 6 – A suspected hacker arrested in Hungary with links to the Football Leaks whistleblower website has been controversially ordered to be extradited to his native Portugal.
