Rodney Marsh: John Terry is a rat but must stay as England captain

Anytime you have the kind of turmoil which has come from the revelations concerning John Terry and Wayne Bridge it, without a shadow of doubt, causes massive disruption within a squad.

There have been many cases of similar disgusting wrong-doings over the years which have led to training ground punch ups and eventual player transfers in an effort to keep the camaraderie alive in a sport that depends hugely on team spirit.

Immense football names, including the likes of the brilliant Leeds United and Manchester United star Eric Cantona, have been reported as causing this type of disruption within a football club.

The chasm in difference comes from the fact that these have all been at club level. Now we have a first. An England captain committing the unforgivable, stabbing a team mate in the back.

Former and current England players players have brought disgrace on themselves and the country by their “off field’ behaviour. Never, to my recollection, has a current captain betrayed a current team mate so blatantly.

I wonder if the rest of the Chelsea players are asking their own WAG’s questions. Nasty times in football.

There’s no way to disguise it. There’s no way to get around it. As a person John Terry is a rat. Every man is alone with his own demons and JT is now agonising, or not, over his disgusting, unforgivable, behaviour towards a team mate. He is the lowest of the low and he knows it. It is much different than going out gambling, drinking and fornicating. However unacceptable that is for a professional athlete it is understandable.

And for all the hypocrites out there, this is something that happens every day in ‘normal’ life at the office, so should we be that surprised that it also happens in our national sport?

After all society as a whole has lost it’s way.

The reports of the last week or so tell a story.

However it does throw up a crucial question. Should what John Terry, the player and arguably England’s most important player and captain, does in his private life be detached from his personal life and behaviour ?

That is the question Capello now has to address. Does he stand behind his captain?

What impact will this have on the rest of the squad? All important and crucial questions to be answered in the coming weeks. The timing of the “outing”could not have come at worse time for Capello. This is a pivotal time for England’s World Cup preparations.

I’ve heard many authorities saying Terry (pictured) should be stripped of the captaincy but allowed to continue as a player. That Wayne Rooney or Gerrard should take over. No!

Wayne Rooney is playing the best football of his life, let him play. Let him enjoy the obvious love he has for football without the burden of the politics of the England media scrutiny. Stevie G is a wonderful footballer but in my opinion his head is not right at this particular point of his career following a pathetic run of team form at Liverpool.

So, I don’t care what anybody says, the England team is more important than the morals of a degrading society.

Do nothing Fabio, JT must be left with his own demons. Maybe this will turn out to be the glue that’s brings the World Cup home to England.

Rodney Marsh is one of the most charismatic and entertaining players to have graced English football. He played more than 400 games and scored over 150 goals during a career at Queen’s Park Rangers, Manchester City and Fulham which saw him win nine England caps. He was also one of the early pioneers of English players to carve out a name for himself in the United States, scoring 41 goals in 87 appearances for the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Marsh is now a popular and respected pundit who will be writing regularly for insideworldfootball.
