October 10 – Thousands of square metres of real grass were laid on Sydney’s iconic Harbour Bridge in an event designed to support Australia’s bid to host the 2022 World Cup.
Breakfast on the Bridge was enjoyed by 7,500 people who tucked into their picnics 50 metres above a glorious Sydney Harbour.
Football Federation Australia (FFA) chairman Frank Lowy and chief executive Ben Buckley were joined by players from the Socceroos and Matildas to roll a giant four-metre high “Come Play!” football down the centre of the Australian landmark.
Players from Football United, a football programme for refugees, and local club the Granville Rage Super Youth League under-15s also took part in the festivities.
“Breakfast on the Bridge is a wonderful example of what Sydney and our nation has to offer – just look at this magnificent harbour landscape” said Lowy.
“It is picture perfect.
“It is an honour that this year Breakfast on the Bridge has a football theme.
“I am delighted to see so many football supporters here today to send a strong message around the world – we want to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
“A FIFA World Cup in Australia will be fun, relaxed, safe and secure.
“We want the world’s greatest sporting event to come to our shores.
“We invite the world to Come Play! in Australia.”
