October 10 – Spain’s Marca Television has gained a package of La Liga rights from the Mediapro agency which shares league rights with Canal+.

The package gives Marca, a free to air broadcaster, the right to show one top flight game, usually on Monday nights, every week.

The deal lasts for the duration of this season, and means there may now be some Real Madrid or Barcelona games shown on free to air television.

Following a resolution to a dispute between Mediapro and Canal+ earlier this season, the two were to share the La Liga giants matches and the El Clásico games between them.

Mediapro’s Gol TV shows eight La Liga matches each week, while its La Sexta channel shows another game each week.

With Canal+ broadcasting 28 matches involving either Real Madrid or Barcelona each season, it is unclear which package Mediapro has relinquished.

Television rights sparked a dispute at the start of this season, with a number of La Liga teams threatening to strike during the first round of the new campaign if the problems between Mediapro and Canal+ were not resolved.

They eventually found a solution which meant the season got underway as planned.
