July 19 – Spanish clubs have acted to halt the falling crowd attendancess by reducing prices for their season tickets. In the last five years, attendances have dropped by more than 7% – variously attributed to the Spanish economic crisis and the already high price of match tickets.
Clubs have opted to cut prices by absorbing the VAT and CPI increases, while offering discounts for young people, the unemployed and families.
However, although it is hoped that the moves will go a long way to stopping the decline in attendances, the average cheapest season ticket price in the Primera is still higher than all other European leagues except the English Premier League.
Current champions, Barcelona, are offering the cheapest season ticket available in La Liga: €99 which only includes Spanish league matches. However, the prices for new members are higher than they were last campaign.
Real Madrid have decided to keep pricing the same as the previous season and are not considering any discounts for young people or the unemployed, but their city rivals Atletico Madrid are reducing prices. The Rojiblancos are offering season tickets in the teenager category for €295 and a 50% discount for children under the age of 12.
Valencia, despite their own financial troubles, have dropped their season tickets by around 17%. Children have a 50% discount while the reduction for the over 65s is 10%.
