August 2 – The Italian football federation has banned Lazio captain Stefano Mauri (pictured) for six months for his part in the 2011 Italian match-fixing scandal.
The Prosecutor Stefano Palazzi had asked for a 4½-year suspension for Mauri who was one of the eight players accused of fixing the Serie A games between Lazio-Genoa and Lecce-Lazio in May 2011.
However, Mauri was cleared of involvement in the Genoa match and only found guilty of failing to report match-fixing in the Lecce game.
The prosecutor had also been looking for points deductions for Lazio, Genoa and Lecce, but in the event the federation fined Lazio €40,000 euros ($53,000) and Lecce €20,000 ($26,000) because of their players’ actions whilst Genoa was cleared.
Alessandro Zamperini, already banned for five years, received a further two-year suspension.
Other bans handed out included Stefano Ferrario (six-months), Mario Cassano (four months) and Carlo Gervasoni (two-months) whilst Omar Milanetto, Massimiliano Benassi and Antonio Rosati were cleared of any wrongdoing.
