January 24 – Fabio Capello has signed a contract extension with the Russian national team, which will see him in charge through to the 2018 World Cup, which the country will host.

The Italian helped guide Russia to their first World Cup in 12 years, and the Russian Football Union had been looking to extend the 67 year-old’s services for another four years.

“The signing of a contract extension with the Russian Football Union and the head coach of the national team Fabio Capello has taken place. The term of the agreement is through the end of the 2018 World Cup,” a message on the Russian FA’s website said.

Contract talks started in October, amid rumours that the Russian Football Union were having difficulty finding the money to pay Capello’s salary, while the former England boss was also linked with a return to club management, with Tottenham Hotspur showing particular interest, following the sacking of Andre Villas Boas.

Capello was offered expanded powers to oversee Russia’s youth teams in order to bring players through for the 2018 World Cup, should he sign a new contract.
