The setting is certainly fascinating and the event promises to be a media heaven. But, as ever, the danger is in the ambush that lurks around the corner. On July 28, in Milan, under the “world” banner offered by the Milan Expo, will be the draw for the calendar of the 2015-2016 Serie A season, which will open on the weekend of August 22-23. But should we be so sure?
Of the draw taking place there is no doubt, but on the start date of the championship there are some doubts surfacing. And all, of course, does not come without consequences. Once again Italian football has been hit by the virus of law breaking. The match-fixers surfaced – and the public prosecutors with them – talking of alleged games sold or bought (depending on your point of view), with the involvement of members of the Serie A clubs around promotion and relegation.
We know that the public justice system at times is something that sports justice cannot afford. At end of summer, in one way or another, the leagues have to start and so – despite the ‘frost’ sometimes affecting the relationship between the two courts – sport needs early deadlines and the rapid passing of judgments. But a couple of months (moreover those of July and August), is this really enough to ensure that the sport’s prosecutors can ensure a verdict? Maybe so, but keep an eye on the twists and turns in this story.
One of the Serie A teams in the spotlight is Atalanta. Under the rules, any penalty points deduction for last season would have to be taken into account – they came fourth last in the league and with the points loss would face relegation to Serie B, returning Cagliari to the heaven of the top division. The hypothesis is complicated (the Sardinian club, currently, is preparing for life in Serie B) but not far fetched, as although we are in overtime, the leagues could still look different if there is a request for a postponement of the top division to investigate all aspects of the match-fixing allegations. Cagliari have much to gain.
If this were to happen, there would be two aspects: practical and political. The practical is straightforward even though undesirable. Sliding the start of the season forward by a week would lead to difficulties in a season that needs to finish ahead of normal schedule to ensure that the national team is prepared for Euro 2016. Of course, despite Cup competitions, more league matches could be played midweek.
This would resolve the impasse but it does not eliminate the other root of the crisis, the political one. It is clear that federation president Carlo Tavecchio has committed in every way to make the regular season start on time, but it is equally clear that some of his opponents, gathered around the figure of Giovanni Malago, president of CONI (and therefore the theoretical “top” of the FIGC), could, if there is a humiliating slip to the start of the season, take the opportunity to attack the commissioner of the Football Association, opening a deep crisis in the government of football, which has already seen resignation of the president of the Pro League, Mario Macalli, a loyalist to Taveccho.
For this reason the sports justice system is running its investigations as fast as it can, hoping to miss as little as possible but trying to not create further pressure for President Tavecchio – after all, the match-fixing they are investigating was not his making. But attacking governance is a powerful tool in sports politics, which leads back to a duel between the wealthy clubs, led by figures such as Galliani (Milan) and Lotito (Lazio), and the opposition gathered around Agnelli (Juventus) and Rome (Pallotta). Predictions? For now, it is best not to take anything for granted. Not even the “sacred” beginning of the Serie A season.

Massimo Cecchini: Tavecchio ed un rinvio pericoloso
La cornice è senz’altro affascinante e l’evento si preannuncia estremamente mediatico. Il problema però, al solito, è quello degli agguati dietro l’angolo. Il 28 luglio a Milano, nella cornice “mondiale” rappresentata dall’Expo, nascerà il calendario della Serie A 2015-2016, che prenderà il via nel weekend del 22-23 agosto prossimo. Tutto così sicuro? Sul sorteggio non ci sono dubbi, sulla data d’inizio del campionato invece qualche distinguo si sussurra. E tutto, ovviamente, non sarebbe senza conseguenze.
Com’è noto, ancora una volta il calcio italiano è stato colpito dal virus dell’illegalità. Le intercettazioni venute a galla – e su cui indicano le Procure della Repubblica – parlano di presunte partite vendute o comperate (a seconda dei punti di vista), col coinvolgimento di tesserati di primo livello per quello che riguarda il calcio di vertice (A e B)
Si sa che la giustizia ordinaria ha tempi che quelli della giustizia sportiva non può permettersi. Alla fine dell’estate, in un modo o nell’altro, i tornei devono cominciare e così – nonostante le ruggini che affliggono a volte il rapporto fra le due magistrature – lo sport ha bisogno di scadenze rapidissime per l’emissione delle sentenze. Ma un paio di mesi (per giunta quelli di luglio e agosto) possono bastare per far sì che la Procura sportiva possa arrivare a verdetto? Forse sì, ma occhio ai colpi di scena.
In Serie A una delle squadre nel mirino è l’Atalanta. A rigor di regolamento, non si può escludere una sua penalizzazione di punti per la passata stagione – in cui è arrivata quart’ultima – che la faccia retrocedere in Serie B, tornando a riportare in paradiso il Cagliari. L’ipotesi è complicata (il club sardo, al momento, sta facendo un mercato da torneo cadetto e non da Serie A) ma non peregrina, e così nonostante gli straordinari si potrebbe arrivare ad una situazione diversa dal previsto, ovvero con la richiesta di un rinvio del massimo campionato per approfondire meglio tutti gli aspetti dell’indagine.
Se così avvenisse, ci sarebbero due risvolti: pratico e politico. Quello pratico è facile da capire ma anche disinnescabile. Anche lo scivolamento in avanti di una settimana comporterebbe difficoltà in una stagione che si vuole concludere prima del previsto per far sì che la Nazionale si prepari al meglio per l’Europeo 2016. Certo, nonostante le Coppe, un turno infrasettimanale in più risolverebbe l’impasse senza però eliminare l’altra radice della crisi, quella politica.
E’ certo che il presidente federale Carlo Tavecchio si sia impegnato in tutti i modi a far cominciare regolarmente la stagione, ma è altrettanto certo che una parte dei suoi oppositori, coagulate attorno alla figura di Giovanni Malagò, presidente del Coni (e quindi teorico “superiore” della Figc), se si arrivasse ad un umiliante slittamento, potrebbero approfittarne per chiedere il commissariamento della stessa Federcalcio, aprendo una crisi profonda nel governo del calcio, che già ha visto le dimissioni del presidente della Lega Pro, Mario Macalli, fedelissimo di Taveccho
Per questo motivo la giustizia sportiva corre più veloce che può lungo i binari di indagini e sentenze, sperando di sbagliare il meno possibile e cercando così di non creare ulteriori difficoltà al presidente Tavecchio, che peraltro di questo tipo di malanni del nostro calcio non è affatto responsabile. E’ noto, però, come ogni argomento possa essere buono per un regolamento di conti, che porti di nuovo a un duello felpato tra la maggioranza, guidata da personalità come Galliani (Milan) e Lotito (Lazio), e l’opposizione coagualata intorno ad Agnelli (Juventus) e Roma (Pallotta). Impressioni? Per ora meglio non dare nulla per scontato. Neppure il “sacro” ‘inizio della Serie A.
