VW stays parked with their German Cup sponsorship through to 2022

March 22 – Scandal-hit Volkswagen has agreed to extend its sponsorship of the German national cup for six years until 2022.

“Football is and will remain an important pillar of our sponsoring strategy,” stated the German carmaker which faces fines and lawsuits over the diesel emissions scandal.

Late last year  it was reported that Bundesliga clubs Wolfsburg, Hannover 96, Werder Bremen and Schalke 04 as well as second division 1860 Munich were on a list of sports sponsorships Volkswagen were considering dropping to cut costs amid the ongoing scandal.

But Wolfsburg, who have just reached the Champions League quarterfinal, insisted they would not be adversely affected.

VW is reported to have been pumping around €100 million annually into Wolfsburg. Volkswagen’s overall sport and sports marketing activities are estimated to be worth several hundred million euros.
