Juventus join PSG as perennial champions, Bayern drop points but on course

By Paul Nicholson

May 2 – Europe’s big teams are once again dominating Europe’s big leagues with Juventus celebrating their fifth consecutive Serie A title with their tenth consecutive league win.

Juventus join Paris St Germain who won their Ligue 1 title (their fourth consecutive win) so long ago that it has almost been forgotten. PSG lead the league by a massive 27 points with three games still to play.

In Germany, Bayern Munich, despite dropping two points after drawing with Borussia Munchengladbach, are still only two points from securing their fourth consecutive Bundesliga win with two games to go.

All three clubs have the opportunity to do League and Cup doubles with the finals of their domestic cup competitions all being played on May 21.

Juventus’ season has perhaps been the most remarkable of the three clubs. Having started poorly and sitting near the bottom of the Serie A table after 10 games, like a long distance runner who starts at the back of the pack, Juventus went on a run that saw them storm through the field winning 25 of their last 26 games.

In Spain it will also be a familiar name on the La Liga trophy, but which name is far from certain. Barcelona returned to the top of the table on goal difference from Athletico Madrid. They are just one point ahead of Real Madrid with two games left to play.

Barcelona are looking for their sixth title in seven seasons, a run only broken by Athletico Madrid in the 2013-14 season.

It is only in the Premier League that an unfamiliar name is likely to win one of Europe’s so-called ‘Big 5’ championships. Leicester City picked up another point at the weekend at Manchester United and now need just two points from their remaining two games to secure the Premier League title for the first time.

They could well be given a helping hand tonight by current holders Chelsea who face Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. A Chelsea win or a draw would mean Spurs can’t catch Leicester. A Spurs win will take the title race into a further week at least.
