June 30 – Manchester City have kept up the pace with their football leading social media output with the launch of a Facebook Messenger account, the first football club to open one.
Recently City were the first club to broadcast a Premier League game in virtual reality, were the first to launch an official Manchester City Giphy page, saw the Etihad-branded video series ‘Global City Fans’ register more than 7 million views on YouTube, and installed a 360-degree camera in the players’ tunnel.
Diego Gigliani, Senior Vice President of Media and Innovation at City Football Marketing, said:
“We are delighted to announce another digital first for Manchester City. Messaging platforms have huge global audiences and our fans all over the world are spending more and more time on them.
“Messaging apps are on the path to becoming one of the most important ways of delivering content directly into fans’ hands, as seen already in China with WeChat, and we wanted City fans to be the first to benefit from this experience on Facebook Messenger.
“We are committed to experimenting with new ways of engaging with our increasingly global, digital and mobile fan base and Facebook Messenger is yet another example of this.”
The Facebook Messenger account will give fans immediate and easy access to club content. Subscribers to the Messenger Bot will access posts in the following streams: Pep Talk, Transfer News and Social Buzz, with a Matchday topic including key events. Video highlights expected once the 2016/17 season kicks off.
To get access all fans need to do is open the Facebook Messenger app on a mobile device, search for and tap Manchester City, and click on ‘Get Started’.
