Weakened Real Madrid lay down marker with gritty Super Cup win

August 10 – Champions League winners Real Madrid edged Europa League titlists and fellow Spaniards Sevilla 3-2 after extra time in a dramatic Super Cup in Norway.

Real were missing key players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and  Toni Kroos but the result augured well for the start of La Liga the weekend of Aug 20-21.

Real looked a beaten side as they trailed 2-1 deep into stoppage time in Trondheim, but Sergio Ramos’s equaliser sent the match to extra-time where defender Dani Carvajal scored a stunning late winner.

Coach Zinedine Zidane said afterwards: “In football you never know what’s going to happen. The good thing about tonight is that we knew it was going to be difficult, but we never gave up.”
