October 3 – Management of one of the world’s most iconic football stadia – Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã – looks set to change hands. Brazilian media reports state that the Government of Rio de Janeiro and the concessionaire of the venue, opened in 1950 and partly rebuilt ahead of the 2014 World Cup, are negotiating termination of the current management contract.
According to Valor Econômico, Rio de Janeiro has hired Fundação Getulio Vargas to prepare a bid notice paving the way for a new auction.
The current 30-year management contract is said to be in the hands of a consortium led by Odebrecht, with a 95% interest, and also including AEG with 5%.
The famous stadium was also used as the venue for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.
