From hero to villain: FIFA investigates lifesaver-turned-throat-cutter Aurier

October 14 – Paris St-Germain and Ivory Coast defender Serge Aurier is being investigated by FIFA after appearing to make a throat-slitting gesture to supporters during last weekend’s 3-1 win over Mali.

Aurier celebrated one of Ivory Coast’s  goals by turning to the crowd and dragging his hand across his throat. FIFA said a “preliminary investigation is under way”.

In the same game, symptomatic of his notoriously unpredictable personality  Aurier was praised for saving the life of Mali forward Moussa Doumbia who was knocked unconscious in a challenge. Aurier intervened to stop his opponent swallowing his tongue.

Mali’s French manager Alain Giresse said he spoke to Aurier after the World Cup qualifier to thank him for his “superb reactions”.
