Schmidt watches Leverkusen lose on his tablet after ‘nutcase’ jibe triggers ban

October 27 – Bayer Leverkusen head coach Roger Schmidt has been banned and fined for calling an opposing manager “a nutcase” during a Bundesliga game.

In a statement the Geman FA said Schmidt had also been handed a €15,000 ($16,330) fine for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

The altercation was with Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann during Leverkusen’s 3-0 defeat at home last weekend, triggering a suspended sentence from February this year.

The ban immediately came back to haunt Schmidt when Leverkusen, who are in this season’s Champions League, were the biggest casualties of Tuesday night’s German Cup second-round matches when they were beaten on penalties by third-tier against Sportfreunde Lotte.

Schmidt was forced to watch TV coverage on a tablet from the team bus.
