Award wars: Will FIFA’s ‘Best’ burst France Football’s Ballon

November 1 – Fans can vote for FIFA’s 2016 world player of the year after the world governing body’s association with France Football’s Ballon d’Or  ended earlier this year.

FIFA have announced that supporters worldwide will be involved in its own revamped award simply entitled ‘The Best’

The  World Player of the Year award was merged with the Ballon d’Or in 2010 but FIFA have now have announced a new individual prize. Votes from national team captains and coaches will account for 50% of the selection process.

The other 50% will be chosen by a selected group of 200 media representatives and an online public ballot among fans. FIFA hope this new system will give their award more credibility than the Ballon d’Or, decided purely by journalists.

The voting process will decide winners in eight categories, with shortlists being revealed later this week and the final decision taken at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich on January 9.

In September, France Football magazine announced it was taking back the Ballon d’Or as its own prize after six years. Last week France Football named its shortlist for the newly-independent award last week.
