November 10 – FIFA’s ethics investigators have recommended a life ban from football for the former president of Honduras, Rafael Callejas, for his part in the ongoing corruption scandal which continues to plague world football’s governing body.
In charge of the Central American country between 1990 and 1994, Callejas became president of the Honduran Football Association in 2002, and also served on FIFA’s marketing and television committee.
His reign came to an end last year when he was one of those indicted by the US Justice Department on fraud and racketeering charges related to the sale of broadcasting rights for the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
The 72-year-old changed his plea to guilty in March and is now awaiting sentence with several other former football bosses.
Cornel Borbely, chairman of the investigatory chamber of FIFA’s ethics committee, found that Callejas contravened five possible breaches of FIFA’s code of ethics including bribery and corruption.
