10-minute sinbins to debut in English grassroots leagues

May 5 – The English Football Association has agreed to trial rugby-style ‘sin bins’ in lower part-time leagues from next season.

The FA plans to introduce what it calls “temporary dismissals” in England’s step seven – six tiers below the National League (which feeds into full time professional football) – and those below.

They will only apply to yellow cards shown for dissent, and will see players leave the field for 10 minutes. More than 1,000 clubs have received a request asking if they are willing to be part of the pilot process.

The International Football Association Board agreed the principle of sinbins in March but only for offences in grassroots, youth, veterans and disability football. A decision will be made – probably within the next three years – whether to introduce them into the professional arena, a move endorsed by Marco van Basten, FIFA’s new chief officer for technical development.
