Terrorist motive ruled out of Dortmund bus bomb attack

May 17 – Federal investigators in Germany say they have not found any indications that there was a “terrorist background” to the attack on the Borussia Dortmund team bus on April 11.

“Investigations carried out up until now have not given us any clues that there was a terrorist background to the attack,” prosecutors said in a statement.

Letters left at the scene had suggested Islamist militants were behind the bomb attack. Prosecutors said they believed a German-Russian dual national who was arrested 10 days later carried out the attack “purely for monetary reasons”.

Investigators have now turned the case over to municipal prosecutors since the multiple explosions didn’t qualify as “a crime against the state of particular significance”

The suspect is accused of taking out a five-figure loan, gambling that the value of the club would drop in the aftermath of what was disguised as an Islamic terrorist attack.

Dortmund defender Marc Bartra, who suffered a broken wrist and other injuries in the attack, returned to the team last week for the first time since last month’s incident.  The attack occurred as the team bus was bringing the players from their hotel to the home leg of the Champions League quarterfinal match against Monaco.
