Chelsea top PL earnings with £152.8m; Man City, Liverpool and Spurs break up old order

May 26 – Chelsea topped the table of Premier League revenue share from TV, commercial and merit awards with £152.8 million for the 2016-17 season. The season marked an earnings breakthrough for Manchester City who came second, ahead of rivals and perennial cash machine Manchester United who were down in fifth spot in terms of PL earnings.

Man Utd will not be overly concerned, having already projected revenue of £560 million plus for the season that will be boosted by the Europa League win earlier this week and the revenue-generating safety of having qualified for next year’s Champions League. With that qualification comes the avoidance of a £23 million penalty clause in their contract with Adidas if they fail to qualify.

Man Utd finished below Arsenal in the league but above them in the revenue table.

The table is also notable for the rise of Spurs and Liverpool who broke into the top tier above the traditional financial power base of Arsenal and Man Utd.

The Premier League disbursements are made up of an even split of the TV rights pot from Sky Sports and BT Sport, which equals £84.4 million per club. The clubs then receive an additional minimum of £13.6 million plus £940,000 per televised match.

The merit payment is based on league position with each place worth £1.9 million. Sunderland, bottom of the table earned just £1.9 million while top of the table Chelsea earned £38 million.

The money ranking shows the increasing power of Spurs and Liverpool who in equal fourth place both earned more than Arsenal and Man Utd.

Sunderland were the only club to earn less than £100 million.
