Modeste turns down €35m move to Tianjin after deal talks with Cologne collapse

July 12 – In a rare rejection of a move to China, Cologne’s French striker Anthony Modeste has turned down a €35 million transfer to Chinese Super League club Tianjin Quanjian.

Modeste, who scored 25 goals for Cologne last season, had appeared to be on his way to Tianjin and was already in China when Cologne terminated discussions “after the parties involved were not able to reach an agreement.”

Modeste told German and French media he had never wanted the transfer in the first place and had turned down the financial package on offer.

Reports suggested that under the deal, Tianjin Quanjian would have agreed with Cologne that instead of paying a transfer fee, the 29-year-old bought out his contract before being reimbursed by the Chinese club.

Several German media reported that Modeste has threatened a lawsuit towards Cologne in order to be integrated back into the club.
