Ghanaian club boss warns government to stay out of election for new FA chief

July 19 – The head of Ghana’s League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Kudjoe Fianoo (pictured), has urged the government not to attempt to impose its own preferred candidate on the national federation as talks continue to find a successor to disgraced former African powerbroker Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Banned by FIFA for allegedly taking bribes, Nyantakyi last month resigned from all his posts – Ghana Football Association president, first president of CAF and FIFA council member -following a television documentary in which he was seen apparently accepting a gift of $65,000 from an undercover reporter.

“Government appointees, like all Ghanaians, are free to comment on the state of Ghana football and suggest names they deem fit to lead the Ghana Football Association,” said Fianoo. “However, any systematic attempt to favour a particular candidate in the GFA presidential race will be vehemently opposed. No one can impose someone on us.”

Fianoo’s comments come after it was disclosed that the government is lobbying ex-Ghanaian international Tony Baffoe to be the next GFA President. Baffoe served as a FIFA Match Co-ordinator at the World Cup in Russia and is the General Secretary of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana.

FIFA is keeping a close watch on the current vacuum in the GFA leadership in case the Accra government appoints its own candidate without a due election process.
