VAR could debut in Champions League at quarterfinal stage

August 22 – UEFA, whose president Aleksander Ceferin has resisted video assistant referees in his club competitions, are considering a partial about-turn and could introduce VARs in the Champions League from the quarterfinal onwards, according to The Times newspaper.

The newspaper says UEFA experts were impressed by the system’s use during the World Cup in Russia and that its club competitions committee is expected to recommend approval when it meets in Monaco next week, with a final decision made by UEFA’s executive committee at the end of next month.

The use of video assistant referees is also on the agenda for the European Club Association’s annual meeting in Split, Croatia, in early September.

After the World Cup, Ceferin said he saw enough to convince him to adopt the system at some stage but was still concerned by inconsistencies.

“We will use it sooner or later for sure,” he said. “We have to make an analysis following the World Cup and see what is and isn’t clear. It can be done but not in a month and not in two months.”
