UEFA keeps stadia closed but Super Cup test to be played with 30% capacity

August 26 – UEFA has confirmed that the Super Cup to be played on 24 September 2020 in Budapest will be the first of its competitions to see a partial return of fans to the stadium, but all other matches will continue behind closed doors “until further notice”.

The Budapest match will be used as a study case with a view to understanding how fans can be returned safely to stadia.

For the Super Cup – to be played between Bayern Munich and Sevilla – the 67,000 capacity Puskas Stadium in Budapest will be reduced to 30% of capacity, roughly 22,000 fans.

UEFA said this will enable it  “to study precisely the impact of spectators on the UEFA Return to Play Protocol.”

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said: “While it has been important to show that football can carry on in difficult times, without fans, the game has lost something of its character.  We hope to use the UEFA Super Cup in Budapest as a pilot that will begin to see the return of fans to our matches.

“We are working closely with the Hungarian Federation and its government to implement measures to ensure the health of all those attending and participating in the game. We will not take risks with people’s safety.”
