UEFA cuts Super Cup deal with Hungarians to allow fans to beat the border block

September 3 – The European Super Cup in Budapest between Bayern Munich and Seville later this month, under threat because of Hungary closing its borders to foreigners, looks like it is going ahead as planned.

The game is being used by UEFA as a test case with a limited number of fans allowed entry: 3,000 from each of the two clubs plus local supporters.

“The closing of borders will have no effect,” UEFA was quoted as saying by Hungarian media. “ This is what the Hungarian Government has assured us.”

The reported comments came 24 hours after UEFA said it was “in negotiations on the requirements for the entry of fans from each country.”

Gergely Gulyás, head of the Prime Minister’s Office, says one possible scenario would be for fans to arrive at the airport with two negative tests, be taken straight to the stadium and then back to the airport afterwards.

It is hoped that up to one third of The Puskás Arena’s 67,000 capacity could be used, with the majority of fans being local. But that has not yet been confirmed.
