Man City move to create digital asset value with Animoc brands deal

December 21 – City Football Group clubs Manchester City and Melbourne City have partnered with Animoca Brands for a range of new digital games and collectibles.

The games will be based on the clubs and released on Animoca Brands’ Gamee casual gaming platform. The digital collectibles will be distributed via the company’s Quidd subsidiary.

The digital assets are also known in the blockchain world as non-fungible tokens (‘NFTs’) and are owned by the buyer (rather than provided as a service to users on a license like most digital assets). “The authenticity, rarity, scarcity, ownership, and other properties of NFTs are independently guaranteed, verified, and secured on blockchain,” said a Man City press release.

The NFTs have value and can be traded for other items, or used in supported games.

The Man City press release said: “Like physical football card collectibles, rare digital collectibles can be extremely valuable. Recently, Animoca Brands sold the first ever official Formula 1® race track NFT, developed for its blockchain game F1 Delta Time, for the equivalent of approximately $223,000, the highest sum ever paid for an NFT.”
