Disbanded by government, Kenyan FA vows to fight on with FIFA support

November 12 – Kenyan football, mired for months in political turmoil, has been dramatically disbanded by the government totally against FIFA rules, prompting instant intervention by world football’s governing body.

The move came just hours before Kenya was due to play Uganda in a World Cup qualifier though they have already been eliminated and cannot qualify for next year’s finals in Qatar.

FIFA has threatened to ban Kenya if the decision to disband Football Kenya Federation is not reversed.

“We kindly ask you to inform the Cabinet Secretary that in the event her decision to appoint a FKF Caretaker Committee and correlated secretariat was to be upheld, we would have no other choice than to submit the present matter to the Bureau of FIFA Council for consideration and decision,” said FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer Kenny Jean-Marie.

The decision to close down the FKS was announced by sports minister Amina Mohamed, who said a preliminary investigation showed it was unable to properly account for money given to it by the government.

A caretaker committee would instead be appointed to run the affairs of the federation for six months, chaired by retired judge Aaron Ringera.

Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwendwa rubbished the committee appointed and vowed to fight any attempts to end his five-year old administration.

“We, the ousted FKF officials, shall remain in charge, and football will continue in this country under our leadership,” he said, declaring he was answerable only to FIFA.
