Africans complete line-up for U17 Women’s World Cup in India

June 8 – African trio Morocco, Nigeria and Tanzania have completed the lineup for the U17 Women’s World Cup in India.

The Moroccans and Tanzanians will feature for the first time at the global finals, with Nigeria returning as regulars. They have taken part in all but one of the past six editions.

A 1-0 aggregate win over Ethiopia was enough for the Nigerians to qualify. Morocco upset Ghana, reversing a 2-0 defeat in Accra on home soil to eventually triumph 4-2 from the penalty spot.

The Serengeti Girls defeated Cameroon 5-1 to book their ticket to India, becoming the first CECAFA nation to qualify for any FIFA women’s tournament.

China and Japan will join hosts India as Asian participants in the tournament. France, Germany and Spain will represent Europe in the 16-team finals.

The draw for the tournament will take place on 24 June. With Bhubaneswar, Margao, and Mumbai serving as host cities, the competition will take in October after it was cancelled in 2020 because of the global health crisis.

It is the second time that India will host a FIFA tournament after staging the U17 Men’s World Cup in 2017 when England triumphed with a 5-2 final win against Spain in the final.
