Sorare signs Serie A to NFT-driven player card fantasy game

July 25 – Fantasy football game Sorare has added Italy’s Serie A to deals it holds with Spain’s LaLiga, Germany’s Bundesliga and the MLS in the US, to release non-fungible token (NFT) player cards for the coming 2022-23 season.

The cards can be collected and traded, and are used to play Sorare’s fantasy football game. The partnership covers 18 Lega Serie A clubs.

No value was given for what was described as a multi-year deal.

“Italy is currently Sorare’s fastest growing market and Italian users are our second largest community globally, so we know there is huge demand for our fantasy game and collectibles in this market,” said Sorare co-founder and CEO, Nicolas Julia.

Serie A has been active in the blockchain space recently with a crypto fan token deal with Socios.com as well as a partnership with football media business OneFootball to release a series of more than 1,300 NFTs next season of Serie A ‘digital monents’.

Lega Serie A is the 12th football league to partner with Sorare. Sorare also expanded outside of football with Major League Baseball and unveiled Serena Williams as a board advisor and French international footballer Kylian Mbappé as an ambassador and social impact partner.

Luigi De Siervo, CEO of Lega Serie A, said: “Sorare is at the forefront of this sector and uniquely combines fantasy football gaming with collectible NFT cards, which allows us to broaden our target audience in order to bring younger fans closer to our football. It is a partnership with great potential and we are ready to launch the first collections ahead of the 2022-23 season.”

Sorare has grown rapidly since its launch in 2019. A recent $680 million investment led by Softbank brought its valuation to $4.3 billion.
