Police drop one of three rape allegations into Premier League player who remains on bail

July 29 – One of three allegations of rape against an English Premier League international footballer has been dropped by police.

The player, who cannot be named for legal reasons but is due to play at the World Cup later this year, also had his bail arrangements extended until October as a result of the development.

The player was arrested on July 4 on suspicion of a rape against a woman that was alleged to have happened in June this year.

He was taken into custody and further arrested on suspicion of two incidents of rape, which were alleged to have taken place in April 2021 and June 2021 against a different woman.

Police say no further action will be taken in relation to the alleged offence in June 2021, but the 29-year-old is still under investigation for the other two alleged incidents.

The club is aware the player is being questioned but he continues to play with the squad and is set to feature when the Premier League season begins in August – despite concern from campaigners and members of Parliament.
