October 12 – Scottish champions Celtic have been fined €15,000 by UEFA over a provocative anti-monarchy banner displayed ahead of their recent Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk in Warsaw.
The banner, complete with expletive slogan (‘F*** the Crown’) was draped from the away enclosure at the Champions League fixture a week after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body deemed it carried a “message not fit for a sports event”.
Celtic, primarily a Catholic club, has historic links to the republican movement in Ireland and many fans have long opposed the British monarchy.
