LaLiga condemns FIFA’s 32-team CWC plan as a threat to whole football ecosystem

December 20 – La Liga has become the latest football body to denounce FIFA’s plans for a 32-team Club World Cup in 2025, saying it may take legal action to stop it.

“FIFA only takes into account a small group of clubs and players, when in professional football there are many professional leagues, thousands of clubs and players who do not participate in these international competitions,” a statement said.

“FIFA seems to forget that and only thinks of a few, without knowing the impact on all in professional football.”

FIFA president Gianni Infantino claims the tournament will become the club equivalent of the World Cup but La Liga said the decision was “made unilaterally and without notice regarding the calendar (and will) irreversibly damage the entire football ecosystem.”

Infantino also floated the idea of a four-team friendly tournament for national sides in March in even-numbered years before major championships.

The Spanish league said it would consider taking legal action “to prevent the Club World Cup with the announced format.”
