Atsu rescued from Turkish earthquake but search still on for Hatayspor’s Taner Savut

February 7 – Ghanaian international Christian Atsu, who plays for Hatayspor in Turkey, has been rescued from the rubble of the devastating earthquake that has hit the country.

Atsu was reported missing in Turkey’s Hatay province and club vice president Mustafa Ozak confirmed he is safe.

“Christian Atsu was pulled out injured. Our sporting director, Taner Savut, is unfortunately still under the rubble,” said Ozak.

Atsu, who won 65 caps for Ghana, joined Hatayspor in September 2022 after a season with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Raed.

The 31-year-old played in the English Premier League for Newcastle United and Everton, on loan from Chelsea. He was last selected to play for Ghana in 2019, but has not officially retired from international football.

Ozat told beIN Sports on Monday that several players and officials had been rescued.

“Hatay was deeply affected,” he said.

The initial earthquake on Monday measured 7.8 on the Richter scale, and was followed nine hour later by a massive aftershock measuring 7.5. The death toll is currently put at 5,100 but is still rising.
