Real Madrid beat Liverpool again as UCL quarter finals take shape

March 16 – Holders Real Madrid cruised into the Champions League quarterfinals as French superstar Karim Benzema’s second-half goal secured a 1-0 win over Liverpool in their last-16 second leg tie that wrapped up a 6-2 aggregate victory.

Bidding to win back-to-back titles and secure a 15th European crown, Real’s progress was inevitable after their dominant first-leg display.

There was never any chance of a historic comeback for Liverpool who have now lost six of their last seven matches against Real in the tournament.

“There are no easy wins in the Champions League and it was a complicated match, but we showed from the beginning how serious we are in our desire to go far in the competition this season,” said Benzema.

Elsewhere runaway Italian league leaders Napoli beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 for a 5-0 aggregate win and join Real, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Manchester City in the draw for the quarterfinals on Friday.
