Uruguay end Israel’s U20 World Cup run, setting up final against Italy

June 9 – Italy and Uruguay will each be bidding for a first Under-20 World Cup title when the countries square off in the final on Sunday.

Italy knocked out South Korea with a 2-1 semi-final win on Thursday after Uruguay had beaten surprise package Israel 1-0.

Both matches took place at the Único Diego Armando Maradona Stadium at La Plata, which will also host the final and the playoff for third place.

Uruguay reached the final in 1997 and 2013, losing to Argentina and France respectively, while Italy will play the decider for the first time.

Italy’s winner against Korea came after 86 minutes, the latest in a resurgent campaign in the knockout rounds after placing third in its group.

Uruguay ended Israel’s successful tournament when Anderson Duarte scored the only goal of the game in the 61st minute. The Israelis had shocked the football world by making it to the semi-finals after defeating Brazil 3-2.

Ironically protests in Muslim-majority Indonesia, he original hosts, against Israel taking part forced FIFA into a late switch of venue with Argentina stepping in at the 11thhour.
