MLS’s Austin FC poaches Borrell from Man City for sporting director role

July 4 – Rodolfo Borrell (pictured) has left his role as Manchester City assistant manager to become Sporting Director at Austin FC in the MLS.

The Spaniard joined City in March 2014 as Global Technical Director, having previously worked in a similar role at Liverpool, before being appointed Head of Coaching for their academy.

He later became part of Pep Guardiola’s backroom team and was named assistant manager ahead of last season when City were crowned champions of Europe for the first time in their history en route to the Treble.

Borrell joins an MLS team in just its third year of competition.

“He brings an incredibly impressive track record, a wealth of experience, and passion for the beautiful game, and we fully believe he is the right person to move our ambitions forward and develop the best players, coaches, and staff for the first team, second team, and academy,” said Anthony Precourt, Austin FC founder and majority owner.
