Greeks keep rioting Croatian fans locked up as they hunt killer

August 15 – All 105 fans suspected of being involved in extensive clashes in the Greek capital that led to the death of a 29-year-old AEK Athens supporter have been ordered to be detained pending their trial.

Three examining magistrates and two prosecutors questioned the detained fans in batches — 30 on Friday, 40 on Saturday and 35 on Sunday — and decided each day whether to detain them pending trial.

The 102 Croat citizens and 3 Greeks have all denied any culpability in the fatal stabbing of Michalis Katsouris. Ten others were injured following extensive clashes in the Greek capital on the eve of the AEK Athens-Dinamo Zagreb Champions League qualifier. The game was subsequently called off by UEFA and rescheduled.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, in Athens for Wednesday’s Super Cup final between Manchester City and Sevilla, is due to meet Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis while in the Greek capital as well as the Greek FA.
