Gattuso replaces Marcelino at Olympique Marseilles

September 28 – Olympique Marseille have appointed Gennaro Gattuso as their new head coach following the resignation of Marcelino.

The former tough-tackling international midfielder moves to Ligue 1 after coaching in Serie A and LaLiga. Marcelino quit last week after just three months in charge amid an ongoing feud with supporters.

“It’s a club and a stadium celebrated throughout Europe for the passion and fervour it exudes,” said Gattuso whose most recent job was Valencia, where he was sacked in January after just seven months in charge.

The Italian takes over following Marseille’s 4-0 defeat at arch-rivals Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, a result which dropped them down to eighth place.

Previously linked with the managerial vacancy at Olympique Lyonnais, Gattuso has reportedly signed a contract until June 2024 with the option for another season.
