Tite returns to Brazilian club scene, tasked with returning Flamengo to big trophy wins

October 11 – Returning to management after exiting the 2022 World Cup with Brazil in the last eight, Tite has succeeded Jorge Sampaoli as manager of Brazilian giants Flamengo with the task of winning silverware in 2024.

The Rio club wasted little time in finding a successor to Sampaoli and Tite had been the frontrunner for days to take up the role.

It means a return for the manager to club football after coaching Brazil at the last two World Cups. Both times the five-time world champions crashed out in the quarter-finals against European opposition.

His job in Rio de Janeiro will not be easy. Managers have come and gone following the glorious season under Jorge Jesus when Flamengo swept past their opponents with barnstorming football, but none of the Portuguese’s successors have managed to replicate his success, with Dorival Junior winning the Brazilian Cup and Copa Libertadores last season.

He was replaced with Sampaoli, who led Flamengo to the final of the Brazilian Cup before losing to Sao Paulo.

In the Copa Libertadores, Flamengo crashed out in the last 16. They have not played a role of significance in the league either, place fifth at present with 44 points from 26 matches, 11 points behind leaders Botafogo.

Tite brings with him a backroom staff, including Cleber Xavier and his son Mattheus Bacchi, who worked with him during his reign as Brazil manager. They will debut against Cruzeiro on Friday.

Tite has a strong track record in the domestic game, leading Corinthians to their first-ever Copa Libertadores and Club World Cup crown.
