Rangers bring in Philippe Clement in bid to bridge gap to Celtic

October 16 – Rangers have appointed former Monaco and Club Bruges head coach Philippe Clement as their new manager following the departure of Michael Beale at the start of the month.

Clement inherits a Rangers side who are joint second in the Scottish Premiership but seven points behind arch-rivals Celtic.

Clement told the Rangers website: “I am hugely excited by this chance to achieve success at one of Europe’s most iconic clubs across four competitions in what remains of this season and beyond.”

The Rangers chairman, John Bennett, added: “I would like to offer my warm congratulations to Philippe as he becomes our 19th manager. His appointment comes at the end of a carefully planned and comprehensive recruitment process.”

Clement arrives with a track record of winning silverware as a manager including the Belgian league once with Genk and twice with Club Bruges. However, failure to qualify for European football this season, after finishing sixth in Ligue 1, was the final straw for him at Monaco.
