November 16 – Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz will resume their last ditch bid to qualify for the Concacaf W Gold Cup on November 16 at home to Panama who currently top their group.
Only the winners of the three League A groups automatically qualify for the 12 team competition to be played in Feb-March 2024. If Jamaica win their remaining two games – they play Guatemala away in their final qualifier – they will squeeze through, but they have no margin for error.
Jamaica played their opening two qualifying fixtures without a single player from their stand-out 2023 World Cup squad. The players said they were pulling out en masse because of “constant mistreatment” by their federation and incomplete payment of World Cup bonuses.
Those bonuses have now reportedly been paid, but whether that is enough to get the most successful men’s or women’s team in Caribbean football history back on the pitch remains to be seen.
In the other groups Mexico and Haiti are hot favourites to qualify and each need just a point each from their remaining games. Second placed nations go into a play-in for the W Gold Cup against group winners from League B. Puerto Rico and Costa Rica are favourites to gain runners up slots from League A, while Guyana and Bermuda head their groups in League B. El Salvador have already won their group.
Concacaf has confirmed the schedule for the tournament’s closing 28 matches which will be played between November 29 – December 5, 2023.
The inaugural edition of the Concacaf W Gold Cup will be played between February 17 – March 10, 2024, in the US. To date, seven nations have secured their qualification including four guests from Conmebol.
