December 12 – The 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup draw has pitched the USA, Mexico and Argentina in the same group which opens February 14. Only two will automatically qualify for the knock-out rounds.
Also in Group A is the winner of the Guyana vs Dominican Republic play-in. The winner will face top ranked and tournament favourites USA in the opening round of games at the Dignity Health Sports Park Track and Field Stadium. Mexico will face Argentina in what is likely to be a deciding fixture in terms of qualification.
Argentina had a disappointing 2023 World Cup while Mexico had surprisingly failed to qualify for the World Cup after a poor performance at the Concacaf W Championship in 2022 in Monterey, Mexico. The two nations did meet in 2023 at the Pan-American games, with the Mexicans winning 2-0.
Group B seeds Brazil, holders of the Copa America Femenina, face fierce rivals Colombia who they beat to win their title. However, recent form favours the Colombians who notably scalped South Korea, Germany, Morocco and Jamaica, before narrowly losing 2-1 to England at the World Cup.
Panama and the winner of either Haiti or Puerto Rico provide the Concacaf opposition in Group B. All group B games will be played at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
Canada headline Group C, to be played at the Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas. They will face Costa Rica, Paraguay and the winner of El Salvador and Guatemala.
Canada were the only participants in Group C at the 2023 World Cup, exiting at the group stage.
The inaugural edition of the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup will be played between February 17 – March 10, 2024, across four venues in three US metropolitan areas (the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles will host the four quarter finals).
