IMG picks up package of international CAF broadcast and sponsorship rights

December 12 – IMG has secured the exclusive international broadcast distribution rights to major African competitions until 2025, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Monday.

The agreement covers the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as well as the 2025 tournament and its qualifiers. The African Nations Championship, Champions League, Confederation Cup and the women’s under-17 and under-20 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments are also included. The deal excludes sales in the MENA (middle east and North Africa) region, the US as well as sub-saharan Africa, but IMG will market the rights in 85 countries.

IMG will also provide marketing intelligence, data analysis and consultancy services to CAF for the development of its new sponsorship strategy that covers selling sponsorship for the next two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Robyn Cox, vice-president and managing director, Africa, for IMG’s media business, said: “The TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations is the biggest event on the African continent and one of football’s most watched competitions. We’re looking forward to expanding our partnership with CAF to help unlock greater value from its media rights, grow the competition’s global audiences and enhance fans viewing experience.”

In 2019, CAF cancelled its 12-year, $1 billion media and sponsorship rights agreement with Lagardère Sports, a decision that has left CAF’s finances in a perilous state ever since.

No detail was given for any guarantee IMG might be paying or revenue share of sales.
