Spain’s SD Eibar highlight legacy and stadium usage with new museum opening

December 12 – Second-tier Spanish side SD Eibar has tapped into the Boost La Liga funding initiative to open an all-new museum exhibition inside the club’s stadium.

The club said the development is a statement of the its growth in terms of branding and making commercial use of the space.

“The project has had two clear objectives. The most important has been to make the club’s history known to all football fans, whether they’re supporters of the team or are fans of other clubs but are paying us a visit. Then, there is another objective, which is generating new sources of income that will allow the club to keep growing,” said a club statement.

Club representatives were part of a delegation that travelled to the UK with other La Liga clubs in November on a fact finding mission to see how British stadiums commercialise their space outside of the football match environment.

SD Eibar praised the support received via the Boost LALIGA funds, saying: “The project has now seen the light of day, but we have been working on this for several years. Logically, the Boost LALIGA project has helped us to gain momentum and to be able to speed up the launch of the project.”

Highlighting the characteristics of SD Eibar’s new museum, the Basque club insisted that combining tradition and innovation has been important.

“Ever since we started this project, we were clear about the type of museum we wanted, while always respecting our idiosyncrasies as a club and respecting our size. The museum is still quite small compared to those of other clubs, but it captures really well the almost 84 years of the club’s history,” said the club.

“There are physical elements such as old shirts, pennants, federation registrations of players such as Xabi Alonso or David Silva, gloves and the boots with which our team played several decades ago. There are also digital elements, showcasing certain goals, detailing the evolution of Ipurua and allowing for interaction. It seems that it is the combination of the digital and the physical that makes the museum at Orsaixan a special one. It means that all kinds of audiences of all kinds of ages can enjoy it, each in their own way.”

SD Eibar sit fifth in the Segunda Division, but will hope to climb up the table with a win against bottom-placed Alcorcon on Sunday. The club was relegated to the second tier in 2021.
