FIFA begins roll out of nominees for Best Awards, starting at the back

December 13 – FIFA has announced the finalists for The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper and The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper awards ahead of the 2023 edition of The Best FIFA Football Awards ahead of the ceremony next month.

Notable absentees for the men’s award nominations are Yashin trophy winner Emiliano Martinez, who earned the award for his heroics during Argentina’s World Cup triumph, and Liverpool’s Alisson Becker.

The full list of finalists for The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper (in alphabetical order):

  • Mackenzie Arnold (Australia / West Ham United FC)
  • Catalina Coll (Spain / FC Barcelona)
  • Mary Earps (England / Manchester United)

The finalists for The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper are (in alphabetical order):

  • Yassine Bounou (Morocco / Sevilla FC / Al Hilal)
  • Thibaut Courtois (Belgium / Real Madrid CF)

Last time out, Alexia Putellas claimed the best women’s player award whilst 2023 nominee Mary Earps won best women’s goalkeeper. Earps is in pole position to reclaim the award after a run of great performances between the sticks for Manchester United and England.

Lionel Messi was awarded men’s player of the year 2022 at the ceremony, but is expected to face stern competition from treble-winner Erling Haaland this time around.

It was an Argentina clean sweep across outfielder, goalkeeper and coach last year, with Emiliano Martinez and Lionel Scaloni also getting their hands on awards after winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina.

FIFA has urged fans to stay poised for more announcements regarding the awards soon, including the finalists for The Best FIFA Women’s Coach, The Best FIFA Men’s Coach, The Best FIFA Women’s Player, The Best FIFA Men’s Player, and the FIFA Puskás Award.

The recipients of The Best FIFA Football Awards 2023 will be honoured at an awards event scheduled for Monday, January 15, 2024, in London, England. It will be the third time FIFA has chosen London as the venue for The Best FIFA Football Awards, following the ceremonies held in the city in 2017 and 2018.
