December 20 – The growing popularity of women’s football in England was underlined Tuesday when national team goalkeeper Mary Earps was voted as the BBC’s sports personality of the year for 2023.
Earps, who starred for England in its run to the Women’s World Cup final in August, follows teammate Beth Mead in winning the multi-sport award.
Mead was the top scorer at the European Championship won by the English on home soil last year and collected the 2022 award.
Earps, who plays for Manchester United, kept three clean sheets at the World Cup, saved a penalty in the 1-0 loss to Spain in the final and was awarded the Golden Glove for the best goalkeeper.
It was a good night for Premier League Manchester City who were named Team of the Year 2023, with head coach Pep Guardiola winning the Coach of the Year award.
Erling Haaland was been named World Sport Star of the Year for 2023 after helping Manchester City secure the treble. The Norwegian scored 52 goals in all competitions as City won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup during the 2022-23 season.
No player has scored more goals for a Premier League club within a season.
