South African TV channel sponsors two top tier clubs for its new SuperSportbet platform

January 15 – SuperSportbet, the South African online bookmaker just launched by South African sports broadcaster SuperSport,  has has agreed a sponsorship with two South African Premier Division (DStv Premiership) clubs – Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

SuperSportbet launched January 5 with the promise of delivering an “unparalleled sports betting experience”.

TV channels launching betting services is not unusual. Taking a major sponsor role in individual clubs with their betting offering is more unusual.

In the UK Sky launched Skybet and in 2018 sold a 60% stake to CVC for £600 million. In 2020 they sold again for a massive £3.4 billion. Sky is the main broadcaster of Premier League and title sponsor of the EFL’s three leagues

In the rapidly de-regulating US market, ESPN launched its online betting platform last November in 17 states.

Meanwhile, Irvin Khoza, Chairman of Orlando Pirates, described the partnership as a ‘testament’ to the shared commitment of the team, SuperSport, KingMakers, and the MultiChoice Group to elevate the sports betting experience for fans across South Africa.

As part of its entertainment offering SuperSportBet is will premiere of its magazine show on January 19. The show will feature analysis, commentary, and behind-the-scenes club and league content.
