February 14 – For the first time since 2018, the Copa Libertadores final will return to Buenos Aires after the Argentinian FA (AFA) confirmed on Tuesday that the country’s capital will host the showpiece match.
“It’s official: Buenos Aires will host the 2024 Copa Libertadores final. What a joy to welcome you to our country, Conmebol!” said an AFA statement.
Hours later, the president of the South American governing body Alejandro Dominguez confirmed the news. The venue has not been chosen yet.
Six years ago, La Bombonera Stadium hosted the first leg between crosstown rivals Boca Junior and River Plate before the second leg, after fan violence, was moved to Madrid in Spain.
This time River Plate’s Monumental Stadium is the frontrunner to host the single-match final, but even so, Conmebol will not settle on a choice just yet as the organisation wants to keep an eye on how the competition progresses.
The Monumental Stadium was recently renovated to boast a capacity of 83,000, making it South America’s biggest stadium.
Last year’s Copa Libertadores final was staged at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Hometown club Fluminense prevailed 2-1 against Boca Juniors following an extra-time goal from John Kennedy. Buenos Aires had also bid to organise the 2023 final.
