Winless in Ligue1 in 2024, Marseilles sack Gattuso

February 20 – Marseille have joined Napoli and Crystal Palace in parting company with their manager within the space of 24 hours.

Gennaro Gattuso (pictured) has been fired by the French club after less than five months in charge according to agency reports.

Gattuso said after Sunday’s defeat that Marseille, who have now gone six games without a win, had “hit rock bottom”.

The 46-year-old arrived at Marseille at the end of September to replace Marcelino Garcia Toral who quit after just seven competitive games in charge.

However, the Italian failed to turn around the fortunes of a team that is currently ninth in the table.

Apart from a narrow 1-0 win over fifth-tier Thionville in the French Cup, Marseille have not won since hosting Clermont on December 17. They were subsequently knocked out of the cup by Rennes.

Their one bright spot has been a 2-2 draw away to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League play-offs with the return leg at the Velodrome on Thursday.

Gattuso previously coached AC Milan, Napoli and most recently Spanish club Valencia. As a player, he won the World Cup with Italy in 2006 and two league titles and two Champions League trophies with Milan

Jean-Louis Gasset, the former PSG assistant coach who was sacked by Ivory Coast halfway through the recent Africa Cup of Nations, will reportedly take charge of Marseille until the end of the season.
